Hunting and Fishing

Picture of an amappo [trip-wire bow]

The Ainu hunted in the mountains using tools such as arrows tipped with poison. They caught animals such as Yezo sika deer, brown bears, foxes, hazel grouses, and mallards. For fishing, they used tools such as marek (fishing spears) and nets. Fish such as salmon, trout, and Sakhalin taimen were caught in the rivers, and cod and flounder were caught in the sea.
